Conformance target

We design and test this website to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. This standard also satisfies WCAG 2.1 Level AA, which is referenced by the U.S. Department of Justice’s ADA Title II rule, and WCAG 2.0 Level AA, which is incorporated into the Section 508 standards.

What we do

• Semantic HTML with landmarks, a logical heading order, and a “Skip to main content” link.
• Full keyboard operation with clearly visible focus indicators.
• Text and interface colors that meet WCAG AA contrast ratios.
• Text alternatives for meaningful images; decorative graphics are hidden from assistive technology.
• Respect for your operating system’s “reduce motion” setting. All moving content, including the home page animation and scrolling tickers, can be paused.
• Layouts that reflow at 320 CSS pixels wide and support browser zoom up to 400%.
• Automated accessibility testing (axe-core) on every page, plus manual keyboard and screen-reader checks.

Compatibility

The site is designed to work with recent versions of major browsers and with assistive technologies such as VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS, and TalkBack.

Known limitations

• The 3D molecular animation on the home page is decorative. Its content is described in text, and a static image is shown when motion is reduced or WebGL is unavailable.
• Linked third-party content, such as journal articles, PDF publications, and news sites, is outside our control and may not fully conform.
